Maria had a very important history test on Monday. Sunday was her only day to study. She had all her books ready. She felt very focused. The day was cold and rainy—perfect for staying inside.
Then, her phone rang. It was her Grandmother. "Maria, the rain is destroying my roses! I need your strong help to move them to the shed quickly."
Maria looked at her books. She looked at the rain. She was smart, but she also valued morals. She remembered: Helping family is the first duty. Personal gain must wait for family needs.
She put on old clothes and walked into the cold rain. Her shoes were quickly wet, and the ground was muddy. It was difficult and uncomfortable work. But Maria worked quickly and with effort. She moved all the big flower pots until the roses were safe.
Her Grandmother gave her a warm hug. "Thank you. You have a kind heart and strong hands."
Maria returned home. She changed her clothes and sat down to study. She was behind schedule, but her mind was clearand peaceful. She knew she had done the right thing.
The sense of peace from fulfilling her duty made her concentrate better. She learned that choosing the right, hard choicefirst always leads to a better feeling than choosing the easy one. Character is built in moments of sacrifice.
