One evening, dark clouds cover the sky. Ben and his younger sister, Emma, are home alone while their parents buy food at the market. Suddenly, a loud wind shakes the windows. Rain falls hard on the roof, and the lights go out.
Emma becomes scared and starts to cry. Ben takes a deep breath, holds her hand, and says, “Don’t worry. I am here.” He finds two candles in a drawer, lights them, and places them on the table. The small warm light fills the room.
To help Emma calm down, Ben tells her simple stories about happy days at the beach and their friendly dog. Slowly, Emma stops shaking. She sits close to Ben and listens quietly.
When their parents return, they see the peaceful room, the candles, and the two children sitting together. Ben’s father puts a hand on his shoulder and says, “Son, tonight you showed true courage.”
Ben learns that courage is not loud or showy. It is loving someone enough to stay steady when things are hard.
