Mr. Lee loved his house. He taught his son, David, that a family must care for what they own. After a storm, the wooden fence around the garden looked bad. Some parts were broken and falling down.
David wanted to be lazy. "Father, let's call a worker and buy a new, easy fence," he said.
Mr. Lee disagreed. "No, David. We must learn to fix what is ours. We have a duty to our home. If we always pay others, we lose our skill and self-reliance."
So, they worked together. Mr. Lee showed David how to use the hammer and nails. The work was slow. David's hands felt tired, and he hit his finger once. He wanted to stop and play a game.
Mr. Lee encouraged him. "Keep going, son. Hard work builds two things: a strong fence and a strong character inside you. Do not quit when the task is difficult."
They worked for the whole afternoon. They fixed every broken part. They painted the new wood. The fence was not perfect, but it was now strong and stood proud. David looked at the fence. It was his work. He felt a deep satisfaction.
They protected their home not with money, but with their time and effort. David learned that responsibility means using your own hands to maintain and defend your property and your family’s things.
